Philosophy
"Are we having fun?" Mixing the different ingredients, talents and strengths, and then distilling it down until they have that perfect shot of social lubricant in music form. Have one then another, a little over indulgence only hurts in the morning.
About the band
Genre: Rock / Punk / Blues
Members:
Derrick "Van" Wiggins - Guitar
With an extensive history of performing guitar, bass and drums, Derrick brings tons of experience to help temper the raw talent that he wields with this ax. His biggest influence is some dude named Eddie, and he can't help but throw in some Van Halen shred into the mix. Stir that in with the Jimis, both Hendrix and Page, Vivian Cambell of Dio fame, Paul Gilbert of Mr. Big and a slight sprinkle Joe Satriani, then cook and serve. Add to that what he's done locally with a number of different groups. Derrick has been seen on stage with groups like Linus (now Army of Me); Juice (now called the Sketches) and Headrush as well as numerous area cover bands. Now with Over Socialized, he's adding his ingredients into the pot where they simmer along with the rest of the band to create a unique sound.
Derrick also brings a child like excitement that is infectious to all those around him. He.s the first to throw up his hands and shout when he hears a song he likes and the last to leave if he's having fun. You can try to keep up with Van Wiggins, but you'll probably die trying. At least you'll die happy.
Cliff Kilpatrick - Vocals & Bass
The poet of the crew, Cliff's been at it since he could and does it all the time. On any given day he will have written yet another song idea, riff idea, bass line idea, well you get the idea. With 15 plus years playing guitar as a solo act and with Cliff, Paul, and Ray, bass is a new challenge that he's taken to like a fish to vodka, with a little OJ in it. His influence are varied, Roger Waters/David Gilmour, B.B. King, Jim Morrison, Curt Cobain, Arlo Guthrie and Bob Dylan to name a few. He is never afraid to show his folk sensibilities, counter pointed with a rawness that channels the old blues singers, strong emotions driving powerful voices that you can feel in your core.
While on stage Cliff will pour his heart and soul into every song, he only asks that you pour him another, and maybe one more.
Jeff McGlew - Drums
With old east coast hip hop, to indie rock it's all about keeping that bounce going is what Jeff tries to bring to the table. Jeff couldn't be having more fun playing with Over Socialized and bringing his sound to the mix. He is excited to be learning as much as he can from his more experienced band mates. With influences that range from Steve Gadd, Stanton Moore - where he pulls as much groove as he can, to Mitch Mitchell of the Hendrix experience and Jason McGerr of Death Cab for Cutie. He's been expanding his sound with every chance he gets. It's not always about playing what's expected; instead it's about playing what feels good. Seeing if he can get a more hip hop beat into a rock song is always a challenge he's giving himself.
